A Guide to Making the Most of Your Tasting Room Experience
Wine tasting is meant to be enjoyable, welcoming, and a little bit educational—but it doesn’t have to feel intimidating. Whether you’re new to wine or a seasoned collector, the tasting room is a place to slow down, explore, and connect. At Rivaura Estate Vineyard & Winery, we believe great wine experiences are built on curiosity, conversation, and respect for the craft.
Here are a few simple do’s and don’ts to help you get the most out of your next visit.
DO: Take Your Time – Wine tasting isn’t a race—it’s a journey. Each pour tells a story shaped by vineyard, vintage, and winemaking decisions. Take a moment to observe the color, swirl the glass, and notice the aromas before your first sip. Let the wine evolve as you taste it.
DO: Ask Questions – There’s no such thing as a bad question in a tasting room. Want to know how a wine was made? Curious about food pairings? Wondering why one vintage tastes different than another? Ask. Our team loves sharing the story behind each bottle, from the vineyard rows along the Clearwater River to the final blend.
DO: Trust Your Own Palate- You don’t need to be a sommelier to enjoy wine. If you like it—that’s what matters. Tasting notes like “black cherry,” “earth,” or “violet” are simply guides, not rules. Try to break down your wine to see what you get for aromas and taste before getting the winemaker’s tastings from staff and compare the two. Everyone’s palate is different, so what they taste, versus what you taste, could vary widely. Your experience is your own, and discovering what you enjoy is part of the fun.
DO: Be Open to Trying Something New- Maybe you always reach for Cabernet Sauvignon, but what about Grenache? Tasting rooms are the perfect place to explore outside your comfort zone and discover unexpected new favorites. Sometimes even revisiting a wine that hasn’t been a favorite in the past, especially from a new winery or crafted with a different winemaking approach can completely change your perspective. You may not have enjoyed a Chardonnay or a Merlot before, but experiencing them from different terroir or cellar techniques, might just surprise you.
DON’T: Wear Heavy Fragrances- Wine tasting is as much about aroma as it is about taste. Strong perfumes, colognes, or scented lotions can interfere with both your experience and those around you. Keeping it neutral allows the wine to speak for itself.
DON’T: Rush Through the Experience- We get it—sometimes you’re on a schedule. But rushing from one wine to the next can make them blur together. Give each pour a moment. The difference between a good experience and a memorable one often comes down to pace
DON’T: Feel Like You Have to Finish Every Pour- It’s perfectly acceptable to leave wine in your glass or use a spit bucket, especially if you’re visiting multiple wineries. Tasting is about experiencing, not consuming.
DON’T: Be Afraid to Say What You Think- Not every wine will be your favorite—and that’s okay. Sharing your preferences respectfully, helps us guide you toward wines you’ll truly enjoy. Honest feedback leads to better recommendations and a more personalized experience.
At the End of the Day—It’s About Enjoyment – Wine brings people together. It tells the story of a place, a season, and the hands that crafted it. Whether you’re visiting us for a casual tasting, a special occasion, or simply passing through, the goal is always the same: to create an experience that feels welcoming, memorable, and uniquely yours.
So come as you are, bring your curiosity, and raise a glass with us!
